Description
Assisting Australian Native wildlife
Living in the Perth Metropolitan area we are very lucky that we have so much wildlife on our doorstep. Unfortunately at times a bird hits a window and injures itself, a kangaroo gets hit and leaves behind a joey or some other Australian wildlife is injured. Many of us want to help but are unsure what we can do!
At the July meeting of the Roleystone Organic Growers, Executive Coordinator Michelle Hazelwood from the Darling Range Wildlife Shelter [DRWS] will speak to us about what we can do if we do if we are aware that an native animal is injured and the steps we can take to help.
DRWS provides assistance to Australian native wildlife in need, including joeys and juvenile kangaroos with numerous birds, possums, bandicoots and shingleback lizards also being nursed. Their objective is to work towards the release of these animals back into their natural environment. Volunteers work hard establishing and confirming safe and suitable release sites for all our wildlife. Each year we record hundreds of admissions.
The day-to-day running of the Shelter is supported by over 100 volunteers who participate in a variety of roles, and including working one or more of the twice daily shifts. Volunteers are available from 8.30am until about 12noon and from 2.30pm until about 5.00pm each day.
If you would like to know what to do if a native animal is injured or to get involved in this local organization, then come along on July 7th at 7.30pm to the Roleystone Family Centre, 19 Wygonda Rd, Roleystone.
Entry $3-members free.
