Hi,

Did you see the Four Corners report this week? It was on cybercrime "Fear in the Fast Lane".

For the next 27 days you can watch it here online http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/view/419222

I was asked yesterday "Is my wireless network safe?".

Well nothing in this world is 100% safe but you can take steps to protect yourself. Other than encrypting your newtork, you should be careful when sharing your drives. If you really need to share your drive between computers on your home network - I'd advise to only share the folders you have to (ie:photos, musics, ect). I wouldn't share your whole drive - and especially avoid sharing folders that have sensitive information.

If you need professional help to check your wireless network settings - Talk to Roleystone ComputersRoleyPC or Bottomup WebdesignsBottomupwebs (Call-out charges may apply).

If you have some questions - please feel free to ask on this forum and get some free advice.

As a side note to the above post.

When you purchase and install your unit try to remember to change the default administration username and password.

Most units ship with a password like, "password" or no password at all.

As soon as you set up your new WLAN router or access point, your first step should be to change the default password to something else. You might not use this password very often, so be sure to write it down in a safe place so you can refer to it if needed. Without it, the only way to access the router or access point may be to reset it to factory default settings which will wipe away any configuration changes you've made.

Enable WPA or WPA2 with a long and uncommon password. Some made up word that is not in the dictionary and contains number as well as special characters such as $#% etc.

If your unit only supports WEP then it is better than nothing.

Lastly I would personally say disable remote administration.

On a last note, I'm still surprised how many wifi units are still using no encryption in Roleystone and surrounding areas.

So be wise and secure your network, otherwise it is the same as leaving your front door open when leaving home:)
